I am just a beginner, but i have learned this by experience. Buy a guitar that you enjoy playing. I have had cheaper guitars, ( I figured I would learn first then get a better one.) I just bought a Martin, it was $700.00 ( which is still cheap by Martin standards, and also guitar standards. ) But it plays like a $2000.00+ guitar. And I dont want to put it down. I cant wait to get home to play it. It sounds beautiful, and I was like wow ! This is what a guitar is supposed to sound like. Makes me want to practice. ;)

Thanks To All So Far For The Tips. They're really Insightful. I'm A Beginner Myself And Here Are Some Things I've Learned So Far...

1. Keep Your Guitar In TUNE! The More You Play/Practice, The More You Have To Tune It!

2. If You're Just Starting To Learn, COUNTRY Music Songs Are The Most Satisfying! They're Easy And Make You Feel Like Your Getting Somewhere!

3. Get A CAPO!

4. Practice, Practice, Practice, And, Oh Yeah, PRACTICE!

Keep Posting Everyone! I'll Take The Help Where/Whenever I Can Get It, I Need It! Thanx!

i believe that my most useful tip would be using your thumb to mute the E string. for instance a C chord. bring your thumb over top of the neck and mute or you can also use your ring finger and mute the E string. sometimes i over mute the E if that makes sense and end up playing like a C/F# if that makes sense. but its whatever is comfortable to you.
